Bird Care

Everyone knows that a pet bird should be kept in a cage, but it should be large enough for it to fly around without banging into the sides of the cage. The horizontal bars are perfect for birds that like to climb, but the bars need to be close together so that the bird cannot poke its head through and get caught. Choose a tray with a pull out tray so that you can clean it easily. You can also line the bottom of the cage with newspapers that you only have to fold up and discard.

You do need to have a bowl for the water the bird needs. While plastic bowls are fine for small pet birds, for larger birds, such as parrots, you need to use a ceramic bowl because these birds will chew up the plastic ones. If you can choose a cage with a built in bowl so that the pet bird will not accidentally tip it over.

A pet bird needs a perch inside the cage. This is where the bird will sit for most of the time. Natural branches are good ideas for perches, but you do have to choose a perch that matches the size and shape of the bird’s feet.

Pet birds also like toys to play with. These toys should be made of leather, wood, rope or chain, which are prefect for chewing on. If you add a mirror to the cage, you will notice the bird looking at itself in the mirror.

Some of the various foods that you can have for your pet bird include bird feed mixes that are specific to various types of birds, seeds and supplements, such as green plants, soaked fruits and vegetables and sprouted seed.

You do need to spend time with your pet bird every day. This includes talking to it and taking it out of the cage, holding it so that it cannot fly away.
